The Apprentice explores the gap between the promise of a trade and one young woman's experience inside a male-dominated workplace. Her account moves between the pride of learning practical skills and the effects of condescension, exclusion and inappropriate behaviour.

About this work

Through a single extended interview and observational footage, the documentary gives its participant room to describe why she chose an electrical apprenticeship, the moments that eroded her confidence and the advice she would now offer other young women considering a trade.

“I had my whole life set out. I knew what I was going to do. I had a plan.”
— Documentary participant

Content note

This documentary discusses workplace sexism, harassment and the mental-health effects of a difficult apprenticeship.
